Description

Listed by the Wexler Team as 1950 10¢ Pr WDDR-002, this proof Roosevelt Silver Dime shows a medium spread toward the center on EPU, OF AMERICA, ONE DIME, the dot, and the leaves on the right — a convergent doubling pattern affecting multiple reverse design elements. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-II and formerly in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-10-1950-801 (removed in the 6th Edition), this variety's Cherrypickers delisting does not diminish its significance but rather reflects evolving editorial criteria between editions. No obverse die markers are noted. Reverse markers include a short thick die scratch protruding below the bottom horizontal bar of the F in OF, and northwest-southeast die scratches starting from the torch base above the leaves and running through the leaves on the right side. The Class II (CONECA 1-R-II) designation indicates Distorted Hub Doubling, where the hub deformed during the secondary impression rather than simply shifting position. As a proof strike from the Philadelphia Mint, this 1950 dime was produced on specially polished planchets with polished dies, and the mirror-like fields characteristic of proof surfaces make the medium spread toward the center more apparent against the reflective background. The Roosevelt Dime was designed by John R. Sinnock, struck in 90% silver at 2.50 grams with a 17.9 mm diameter. The 1950 proof set had a relatively low mintage of approximately 51,000 sets, making proof varieties from this year inherently scarce regardless of the variety's individual die population.
