Description

Third documented BIE die break at Hardy position 4 for the 1950 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, this variety was recorded on November 5, 2020, with cross-references of Cohen Pending and Hardy 50P-4F. The 1950-P had a relatively low mintage of 272,635,000 compared to peak Wheat Cent production years, which constrains the total number of die pairs used and consequently limits the pool of potential BIE break events. Three BIE breaks at position 4 for a date with this mintage level aligns with statistical expectations — contrast this with the seventy-plus varieties documented for the high-production 1957-P date. The Hardy 50P-4F designation locates this break within position 4 between B and E of LIBERTY, and the "F" suffix provides positional specificity. The 1950-P Wheat Cent occupies an interesting position in the series: mintages had declined from their wartime peaks as the postwar economy stabilized, yet production remained sufficient to generate meaningful die variety populations. The bronze composition of 1950 cents (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) represented the original alloy that had been used since the denomination's redesign in 1864, and this softer planchet material interacted with die steel somewhat differently than the later zinc-core composition adopted in 1982.
