Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-001 with Universal Variety Code UVC-3020, this is the most significant doubled die reverse known for the 1948 Lincoln Wheat cent. The doubling is dramatic, showing extreme extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, both wheat ears and stems, ONE, and OF AMERICA, placing it among the stronger doubled die varieties in the Wheat cent series. Die marker records tracked under DMR-003 document three known die stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where the reverse is in early-to-mid die state with die chips developing on the bust over the V.D.B. initials, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The progression of die chips over Victor David Brenner's designer initials provides a useful attribution checkpoint for determining which die state a given specimen represents. The 1948 Lincoln cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in the traditional 95% copper, 5% tin-and-zinc composition, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19 mm diameter. Philadelphia produced 317,570,000 cents in 1948, a substantial mintage that reflects the post-war economic expansion. As the DDR-001 designation indicates, this is the premier doubled die reverse variety for the date, typically the strongest and most collectible. The Lincoln Wheat Cents 1909-1958 series is one of the most actively studied for die varieties, and strong doubled dies like this one command significant premiums over face value, particularly in higher grades where the doubling characteristics are fully preserved.
