1946-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-021
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-773 and DMR-051, this San Francisco Mint Roosevelt Silver Dime carries the twenty-first documented doubled die reverse for the inaugural 1946-S date, exhibiting medium extra thickness across UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DIME, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and both olive and torch stems on the reverse. The die progressed through three stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B showing multiple die scratches around the outside lettering at early-to-mid die state with the obverse also at EMDS, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The obverse pairs with ODV-002, and the reverse mintmark is classified as MMS-001, the trumpet tail style. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime reverse, featuring a torch flanked by olive and oak branches, was brand new in 1946 — introduced to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in April 1945. The inaugural year required the Mint to prepare entirely new hubs and master dies, and the multiple hub impressions needed to create working dies increased the probability of misalignment between impressions. Twenty-one documented doubled die reverses from the first year of a new design confirms that the initial die production process generated numerous hub alignment variations. San Francisco struck approximately 27.9 million Roosevelt Dimes in the 1946 inaugural year on 90% silver planchets, the last generation of silver dimes that would continue through 1964.
