Description

Sixteenth cataloged doubled die reverse for the inaugural 1946-S Roosevelt Dime, DDR-016 carries first-year-of-issue significance as a variety from the debut of John R. Sinnock's design honoring President Franklin D. Roosevelt. VarietyVista assigns die markers UVC-124 and DMR-032, with the obverse identified as ODV-001 and the mintmark as Trumpet Tail style (MMS-001). Three die stages are documented: Stage A at Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State — where both the obverse and reverse are confirmed as Late Die State. The variety shows a light spread on AMERICA and DIME, with the doubled outlines most apparent on these reverse legend elements. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime replaced Weinman's Mercury Dime in 1946, chosen to honor FDR's connection to the March of Dimes campaign. The San Francisco issue was struck in 90% silver at 17.9mm — the last era of silver circulating dimes before the Coinage Act of 1965. Examine AMERICA and DIME for the light spread, confirm the trumpet tail S mintmark (MMS-001), and note that Stage C specimens show Late Die State characteristics on both sides.
