1946-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-014
Error
Description
VarietyVista documents DDR-014 on the 1946-S Roosevelt silver dime with UVC-122 and DMR-030, showing medium spread on AMERICA and UNUM, along with spread on the right branch leaves, plus rotational spread on DIME. The combination of linear spread on some elements and rotational spread on others suggests a complex hub interaction that cannot be fully explained by a single simple mechanism — possibly a combination of rotation and lateral shift between hub impressions. Three die stages are tracked: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state where a die scratch appears south from the upper olive to the lower branch, with the obverse also in late die state. An important pairing note documents the obverse as ODV-001 and the reverse as MMS-001 (Trumpet tail mintmark) — the trumpet tail referring to a mintmark style where the S has a distinctive elongated lower serif resembling a trumpet. The 1946-S Roosevelt dime is the first year of the series, as John Sinnock's Roosevelt design replaced the Mercury dime beginning in 1946. San Francisco struck approximately 27.9 million dimes that year. First-year-of-issue doubled die varieties hold special status among specialists because they represent die hubbing anomalies from the very earliest production runs of a new design, when tooling was being refined and die-making procedures were being adapted to the new hub configuration.
