1946-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-112 and DMR-020, this 1946-S Roosevelt Silver Dime DDR-004 presents a convergence of multiple variety types on a single coin: the reverse shows light spread on DIME, RICA of AMERICA, and NUM of UNUM, while the obverse is identified as ODV-001, and the reverse is independently listed as RPM-009 and MMS-001 featuring a "Trumpet tail" mintmark — a misshapen S mintmark where the terminal curve extends outward in a trumpet-like flare. This concentration of multiple variety designations on a single die pairing makes it a combination variety of significant interest. Die stage documentation begins at Stage A showing the reverse listed as RPM-009 at EDS with a strong die scratch through UNIT of UNITED and a light straggly die gouge on the lower chin. Stage B advances both dies to early mid-die-state (EMDS), and Stage C shows the die scratch on the reverse almost completely gone — demonstrating how die polishing progressively removes surface features over time. The 1946-S Roosevelt Dime holds special significance as the inaugural year of the Roosevelt Dime series, introduced to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in 1945. Designed by John R. Sinnock, the coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver composition weighing 2.50 grams with a 17.9 mm diameter. The first-year status of the 1946 Roosevelt Dime combined with the multiple overlapping variety designations — DDR, RPM, MMS, and ODV — on this specific die pairing creates a numismatic artifact documenting several independent die manufacturing anomalies that coincidentally occurred on the same pair of dies.
