1946-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011
Error
Description
Exhibiting a very close Class II spread toward center on the upper left wheat ear, this 1946-S Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDR-011 shows subtle hub doubling requiring careful examination. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1946-S 1c WDDR-011, the variety was struck at San Francisco in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) during the first postwar year. The obverse carries a Ball Serif S mint mark. Obverse markers include a die scratch north from the upper right of T in LIBERTY, two intersecting scratches north from Y in LIBERTY, and a long curving scratch across the base of the bust. On the reverse, a weak north-south scratch appears right of the T in CENT, with a short scratch north from the top of the T. The "very close" Class II notation indicates the displacement is tight enough to require magnification, distinguishing it from dramatic wide-spread varieties. Eleven DDRs for the 1946-S reflects the attention paid to postwar San Francisco Wheat Cent dies.
