Description

Hub doubling, the mechanism responsible for creating varieties like this 1946-S Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDR-007, originates during die manufacture rather than during coin striking. A master hub bearing the coin's design is pressed into a working die blank under enormous hydraulic pressure, and if the hub and die are not perfectly aligned for each impression, or if the die shifts between the multiple impressions needed to fully sink the design, the finished die carries two slightly offset versions of the design. Every coin struck from that doubled die displays identical doubling, which is the key diagnostic distinguishing true hub doubling from machine doubling that varies from coin to coin.
