1946-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

After four years of wartime metal substitutions, the 1946 Lincoln Wheat Cent marked the return to the standard copper-tin-zinc alloy that had defined the series since 1909. The Denver Mint struck this WDDR-002 doubled die reverse during that first postwar production year, when dies were once again impressing designs onto familiar bronze planchets rather than the steel and shell-case brass of 1943-45. The transition back to standard composition brought its own manufacturing adjustments, as the Mint recalibrated striking pressures and die preparation processes for the softer alloy.
