Description

Fourth in the catalog of doubled die reverses for the 1945 Mercury Dime, WDDR-004 shows spread on the right star, E PLURIBUS UNUM, DIME, and AMERICA on the reverse fasces design. Die markers on the reverse include die clash evidence, where transferred obverse design elements are visible on the reverse die surface from an instance when the dies struck each other without an intervening planchet. The presence of die clash markers alongside the doubled die attribution documents two separate die anomalies on the same working die — the hubbing displacement that created the doubling and the subsequent clashing event during striking. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1945 10¢ WDDR-004, Adolph Weinman’s Mercury Dime reverse features the Roman fasces flanked by olive branches, and the geometric elements of this design — particularly the horizontal bands of the fasces and the evenly spaced lettering — display hub doubling with clarity when spread is present. The 1945 date represents the final year of Mercury Dime production before the Roosevelt Dime replaced it in 1946, giving terminal-year varieties added collecting significance. Die Markers: Obverse: A short die gouge runs ESE from the rim to the left of the R in LIBERTY. A die scratch runs from SSW to NNE in the field between the lower right leaves and the RICA in AMERICA.
