1945 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA 4-R-II+VI under Wexler Variety ID 1945 10 cent WDDR-003, this Philadelphia Mercury dime exhibits strong tripling plus separation toward the center on USA, ONE DIME, E PLURIBUS UNUM, both stars, both dots, and the outermost leaves, with the tripling most pronounced on the left star. Two parallel die scratches curve WSW from the upper left I of LIBERTY on the obverse, while numerous scratches extend NE from 945 in the date. Remnants of die clash marks appear to the left of the profile. On the reverse, a small die gouge sits just SE of F in OF, another inside the lower first S of STATES, and strong die clash marks run through the leaves on the left side. The dual Class II+VI designation indicates two separate hub events created both directional spread and distended extra thickness, with the tripling on the left star representing three distinct hub impressions. Mercury dimes from the series' final year were struck in 90% silver, and this WDDR-003 stands among the more visually dramatic doubled die reverses in the Winged Liberty Head series. The star tripling provides the most accessible initial diagnostic.
