1945 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
Cataloged as UVC-1674 with die marriage DMR-015, this 1945 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits light spread on the left wheat stalk combined with extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the right wheat stalk. The combination of light spread on one side and extra thickness on the other suggests a hub doubling event that displaced design elements asymmetrically across the reverse die. The left wheat stalk shows the more pronounced effect with visible spread, while the motto and right wheat stalk display the subtler extra thickness characteristic of lower-magnitude doubling. Philadelphia struck over 1.04 billion Wheat Cents in 1945, a massive wartime output that consumed an extraordinary number of die pairs. The 1945 cent was struck in the shell-case alloy adopted in 1944 after the previous year's zinc-coated steel composition, returning to a copper-based planchet. DDR-003 is the third cataloged doubled die reverse for 1945, and the multiple diagnostic areas across both wheat stalks and the motto provide several confirmation points for attribution under moderate magnification.
