1945-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

This 1945 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel is a triple-attributed COMBO variety: the obverse is listed as WDDO-012, and the reverse also carries the WRPM-035 repunched mintmark designation. Struck in the wartime 35% silver alloy, with the large mintmark above Monticello's dome distinguishing it from standard copper-nickel issues. WDDR-007 is a Class II Distorted Hub doubled die. Close Class II doubling shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and slightly on the last O in MONTICELLO. Cross-referenced as CONECA DDR-002. Attributed by Jim Shriver. Reverse die markers include strong concentric die scratches at the rim throughout most of the upper reverse, an east-west die scratch through the FI in FIVE, an east-west die scratch above the roof, parallel NW/SE die scratches above the right porch, and a die gouge above the N in MONTICELLO. The triple attribution as DDR, DDO, and RPM on a single die marriage makes this one of the most comprehensively documented 1945-D die pairs in the wartime Jefferson Nickel series.
