Description

Cataloged under UVC-805 and DMR-074, the 1945-D wartime silver Jefferson Nickel DDR-010 exhibits medium spread and extra thickness across all major reverse design elements — E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and MONTICELLO. The 1945-D was struck in the 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese wartime alloy, with the large D mint mark placed above the Monticello dome in the standard wartime nickel position. Three die stages are documented. Stage A is early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B is mid-die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage C is the most significant phase: by the late die state a die crack has developed running from the left side of the mint mark northward to the rim, passing through the B of PLURIBUS; additionally, the obverse is confirmed late die state at this stage. The Stage C die crack through PLURIBUS is the most decisive late-stage attribution marker, anchoring the variety for collectors examining circulated or late-state examples.
