1945-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005
Error
Description
Featuring one of the most extensive spread patterns among wartime silver Jefferson Nickel varieties, DDR-005 on the 1945-D shows medium spread on PLURIBUS UNUM, STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and the last O of MONTICELLO — four elements spanning nearly the full reverse of Felix Schlag's design. A distinctive directional gradient characterizes the doubling: spread increases from left to right, consistent with pivoted hub doubling where the rotation axis sits left of center. The involvement of the last O of MONTICELLO — rather than the full word — precisely maps the rightmost boundary where spread peaks, serving as a highly specific diagnostic detail. Die markers UVC-800 and DMR-067 confirm the working die; the high DMR reference number reflects extensive cataloging of 1945-D wartime varieties. Struck at the Denver Mint in wartime silver alloy (35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese) with a large D above Monticello's dome identifying the composition. Examine FIVE CENTS and the final O of MONTICELLO under 5x to 7x magnification, where the left-to-right gradient produces maximum displacement.
