1945-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Description

A dual variety combining two distinct die errors, DDR-002 on the 1945-D wartime Jefferson Nickel is simultaneously listed as RPM-021 — a repunched mintmark where the large D above Monticello's dome was punched more than once, leaving traces of the initial impression. This pairing of doubled die reverse with repunched mintmark on the same working die makes DDR-002 especially appealing to collectors who value multi-error coins. The doubled die component shows very light spread on upper STATES OF and lower CENTS, indicating the hub displacement barely exceeded the detection threshold in those zones. Die markers UVC-284 and DMR-025 confirm the working die. The 1945-D was struck at the Denver Mint during the final year of the wartime silver alloy program, composed of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese — adopted in 1942 to conserve nickel for wartime industrial use. The large D mintmark above Monticello's dome identifies the wartime composition. Examination should address both varieties: inspect STATES OF and CENTS for the very light DDR spread, then examine the D mintmark for repunching traces.
