Description

Eighth cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1944-S Lincoln Wheat Cent, DDR-008 displays a light spread on the outside of the left wheat ear. VarietyVista catalogs this under UVC-1659 and DMR-027, with the mintmark style identified as MMS-006, featuring a ball serif on the S mintmark that distinguishes it from the straight-serif MMS-005 punch used on other 1944-S dies. Stage C places both the obverse and reverse in Late Die State, indicating this coin was struck near the end of the die pair's service life when accumulated wear had softened design details. The light spread on the left wheat ear results from a secondary hub impression that shifted during reverse die preparation, doubling the outer contour of the stalk. San Francisco's 1944-S cents were struck on shell-case bronze planchets during the wartime recovery from 1943's zinc-coated steel composition.
