1943-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

As the first catalogued doubled die reverse for the 1943-S Washington Quarter, DDR-001 carries the foundational number in the VarietyVista DDR sequence for this date and mint. The reverse exhibits strong extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, QUARTER DOLLAR, and both stems of the heraldic eagle design — a broad, heavy spread that affects the central and peripheral reverse legends and the structural design elements simultaneously. A secondary diagnostic is present on the obverse: a minor Class V counterclockwise spread is visible on LIBERTY, extending the doubling evidence to both sides of the coin. Die markers are catalogued under UVC-0370 and DMR-021. Three die stages are documented: Stages A and B are Early and Middle Die State respectively, both currently unconfirmed; Stage C is Late Die State, defined by a die crack across the base of the bust and into the top of the 1 of the date.
