Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-006 with universal variety code UVC-3477 and die marriage record DMR-023, this 1943 San Francisco Lincoln wheat cent shows extra thickness from doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots, both wheat ears and stems, ONE CENT, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, covering virtually all major reverse design elements. Three die stages document this die pair's progression. Stage A in early die state shows a die gouge on the N of ONE while the obverse is also in early die state. By Stage B at early-to-mid die state, a die crack extends from the first U of PLURIBUS to the E of CENT, and a second crack runs from the lower right wheat grains to the rim, with the obverse in early-to-mid state as well. Stage C in late die state has unconfirmed markers. The 1943 San Francisco wheat cent was struck on zinc-coated steel planchets to conserve copper for the war effort, and doubled dies on steel cents present unique challenges because the zinc coating can obscure fine die characteristics. The breadth of doubling across the entire reverse legend and design makes this a comprehensive DDR.
