1943-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Among the strongest doubled die reverses known on the 1943 steel cent series, this variety is cataloged in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1943-S 1-cent WDDR-003. A very strong Class II spread toward the center is visible on the O of ONE, the TES of STATES, and OF AMERICA, while Class VI extra thickness appears on EPU and the dots. Two parallel die scratches running from west-southwest to east-northeast through the PLU of PLURIBUS serve as reverse die markers, along with X-shaped die scratches through the I of PLURIBUS. A die scratch extends northeast from the second dot through the upper left first U of UNUM, another runs south-southwest from the center of the underside of the diagonal bar of the N in ONE, and a short die gouge runs north from the top left of the lower horizontal bar of the E in CENT. No obverse die markers have been noted. The strength of the Class II spread on ONE and STATES makes this variety detectable even at modest magnification, placing it among the more accessible doubled dies for collectors entering the steel cent specialty.
