Description

Steel cents from 1943 are among the most recognizable coins in American numismatics, and this San Francisco doubled die reverse adds die variety interest to the wartime composition. Attributed by VarietyVista, the doubling shows extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots, and right wheat stalk. Unusually, two distinct die pairs are documented across die states. First pairing (UVC-3460/DMR-020) Stage A: three small die gouges above left stem tip (EDS), strong die gouges through IN GOD WE TRUST (EMDS), very light die crack over V.D.B. Second pairing (UVC-1605/DMR-016) Stage B: reverse MDS, obverse die changed (MDS). Stage C: LDS unconfirmed. Two die pairs means the same doubled reverse die was paired with different obverse dies during its working life. Struck on zinc-coated steel planchets to conserve copper for the war effort, the 1943-S represents San Francisco's contribution to the single most distinctive year of Lincoln Cent production.
