1942-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-IV, Breen #2161, and Coppercoins 1942S-1DO-002 under Wexler Variety ID 1942-S 1¢ WDDR-003, this San Francisco Lincoln wheat cent pairs a doubled die reverse with a strong Class IV doubled die obverse. The obverse, separately listed as WDDO-002, shows spread to the southwest on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and Lincoln's vest, with tripling on the letters of TRUST that is especially pronounced on the lower U. A long die scratch extends north from the Y of LIBERTY, and a die crack runs across the base of the bust. The reverse carries several parallel die scratches running south from IC in AMERICA toward the right wheat stem, plus a scratch south from the bottom left of the O in OF to the top of the left wheat stem. The dual designation as both WDDR-003 and WDDO-002 makes this a paired doubled die variety, where both sides of the coin exhibit hub doubling from separate misalignment events.
