1942 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005

Description

A proof Jefferson Nickel struck in the pre-war silver alloy, the 1942 DDR-005 is cross-referenced as VarietyVista UVC-695/DMR-042. The 1942 proof nickels were produced before the wartime alloy change, meaning this coin was struck on standard 75% copper and 25% nickel planchets rather than the 35% silver wartime composition used on later 1942 and subsequent war nickels. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State, Stage B in Mid Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State. The doubling presents as spread on AMERICA, LLO of MONTICELLO, the right edge of the building facade, and UNUM in E PLURIBUS UNUM — a distribution across both architecture and lettering indicating a broad hub displacement. Doubled die varieties on proofs are notable because enhanced striking pressure and mirror-finish fields make even subtle doubling more visible than on business strikes.
