1941 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-011
Error
Description
Strong spreading north on the beak, arrows, and wreath defines DDR-011 for the 1941-P Washington Quarter (90% silver) — one of the more visually prominent reversed doubled die varieties in the series, with the northward spread affecting multiple distinct design elements on the reverse. Catalogued UVC-0177 and DMR-027, three die stages are documented: Stage A (early die state); Stage B (mid die state), introducing a die crack on the eagle's right wing as a mid die state reverse marker and a mid die state obverse; Stage C (late die state), extending the wing crack to the Q of QUARTER and adding a die crack across the upper hair as a late die state obverse marker. The 1941-P Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver — 90% silver, 10% copper — at the Philadelphia Mint under John Flanagan's design. The northward spread on the beak is typically the most readily visible doubling element on well-circulated examples, while the arrows and wreath doubling become more apparent under magnification on cleaner surfaces. The Stage C die crack extending to Q of QUARTER is the definitive late-die-state marker for sequencing examples.
