1941 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
Error
Description
Fourth doubled die reverse for the 1941 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, WDDR-004 occupies an early position in the documented sequence of hub doubling varieties for this prolific pre-war date. The lower sequence number often correlates with earlier discovery, and in many cases with more prominent doubling that attracted researcher attention before subtler varieties were identified in subsequent examinations. Doubled die reverses are created during die manufacture, not during the striking process — a distinction that determines both the consistency of the variety (every coin from a DDR die shows identical doubling) and its collectibility (true hub doubling is valued far above the inconsistent machine doubling that occurs during striking). The 1941 Lincoln Wheat Cent was one of the last pre-war issues, with Philadelphia producing well over 800 million pieces before the compositional disruptions of 1942-1945 altered cent production. The Wheat Cent reverse by Victor David Brenner features delicate wheat stalk detail and fine-seriffed lettering that make it an excellent canvas for revealing hub doubling effects. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1941 1¢ WDDR-004, this fourth DDR is a core entry in the 1941 doubled die reverse inventory that has grown to encompass ten or more documented varieties.
