Description

Mixed doubling characteristics define DDR-001 of the 1941 Jefferson Nickel: medium spread on the text inscriptions E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FIVE CENTS, combined with extra thickness on the word MONTICELLO itself. This combination — directional spread on the legends but distorted hub thickening on the building name — suggests a complex hub-to-die interaction where different portions of the die experienced the misalignment differently. Philadelphia struck 203.3 million nickels in 1941, the highest pre-war production figure for the series, generating an enormous number of die pairs and proportionally more opportunities for hubbing anomalies. Die markers UVC-666 and DMR-003 provide the attribution framework. As DDR-001, this is the primary doubled die reverse for the date, and the combination of two distinct doubling mechanisms on a single die is unusual — most doubled dies exhibit one class of doubling uniformly across all affected elements.
