1941-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

This 1941 Denver Mint Walking Liberty Half Dollar is a COMBO variety: the obverse is also a doubled die listed as WDDO-002 in the Wexler Doubled Die Files. Struck in 90% silver (0.3617 oz ASW), the Walking Liberty series (1916-1947) is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful U.S. coin designs. Obverse die markers include an east-west die scratch to the left of the upper area of the first 1 in the date, a die scratch from the bottom of the first 1 running northeast to the lower curve of the 9, and northeast-southwest die scratches through the lower and center areas of the second 1. Die scratches from the date area provide critical attribution diagnostics for the WDDO-002 pairing. On the reverse, light die scratches extend south from the eagle's beak and palette area. The dual attribution as both WDDR-001 and WDDO-002 makes this die marriage particularly desirable, as collectors can document two distinct forms of hub doubling on a single coin. Denver's 1941-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar mintage provided ample production, yet COMBO varieties linking both obverse and reverse doubled dies remain scarce finds.
