1941-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Originally discovered by Delma K. Romines and cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1941-D 1¢ WDDR-001, this Lincoln Wheat Cent carries cross-references to CONECA as 2-R-VI and Coppercoins as 1941D-1DR-002, confirming its recognition across multiple attribution systems. The variety exhibits very strong Class VI (Extra Thickness) spread on the letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots flanking the motto, both wheat ears and stems, and the outermost letters of U.S.A. The Class VI mechanism produces thickening rather than distinct separation of design elements, where the secondary hub impression overlaps the primary so closely that individual doubled images cannot be resolved — instead, each affected element appears noticeably bolder and heavier than normal. Die marker documentation distinguishes two stages: Obverse Stage A shows a die scratch extending east from the top of Lincoln's bowtie, while Stage B retains the same bowtie scratch. Reverse Stage A features a die scratch extending northwest from the upper left C of CENT and a die scratch north from the upper right N of UNITED. Reverse Stage B adds a die chip on the bottom of the T in CENT, documenting progressive deterioration. The Lincoln Wheat Cent was designed by Victor David Brenner for the obverse and struck at the Denver Mint in 1941 in standard bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The very strong class VI doubling affecting the peripheral inscriptions, motto dots, and both wheat ear devices makes this a particularly visually impressive variety that can be detected under moderate magnification, distinguishing it from the subtle class VI varieties that require high-power examination.
