1940-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
Error
Description
WDDR-004 on the 1940-S Lincoln Wheat Cent is a Wexler Team attribution, Variety ID 1940-S 1¢ WDDR-004. The doubling manifests as a spread toward center on the wheat kernels in the lower right stalk — a close, inward-spreading doubling that requires 5x–8x magnification to resolve against the stalk geometry. Additional extra thickness appears on the upper right wheat ear, right stem, second A in AMERICA, and ES in STATES — broadening the doubling across both the grain and legend elements. Die markers are documented on both the obverse and reverse sides, providing multiple confirming identifiers beyond the primary doubling. The 1940-S Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at San Francisco. Doubled die reverses on wheat cents of this era are collected as a distinct attribution category, and the kernel-area doubling on WDDR-004 is one of the more specific diagnostic locations in the right-stalk wheat anatomy. The spread-toward-center direction confirms the doubling class and distinguishes this variety from hub-doubling events with rim-ward spread characteristics. Reverse: A die gouge line runs through the upper right wheat kernels in the right wheat stalk. Two short die gouges extend from the rim at about 3:00. A die gouge runs NW from the 3rd left kernel from the top of the left wheat ear. Short die gouges run east from the upper left of the first U in PLURIBUS.
