Description
Obverse Stage B: Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: The obverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1940-S 1¢ WDDO-002. Extra thickness shows on the date, LIBERTY, and IGWT with the strongest spread on the date. Extra thickness shows on the date, LIBERTY, and IGWT with the strongest spread on the date. A die crack runs from SSW to NNE through the left side of the E in LIBERTY. A die gouge can be found in the field to the left of the head well left of the center of the ear. A light die crack runs from WSW to ENE through the hair above the ear. Obverse Stage B: The die crack through the E in LIBERTY now extends all the way to the rim at about 8:00. The die crack through the hair now extends to the back of the head and all the way to the U in TRUST. A very light die crack runs SW from the 9 through the base of the bust and out to the rim at about 6:00. Obverse Stage C: The die crack from the 9 is much heavier. Reverse Stage A: A feeder finger gouge runs north from the top of the T in CENT through the lower E in ONE. Reverse Stage B: A light die crack runs from the tip of the left wheat ear through the E in EPU and out to the rim. Reverse Stage C: The die crack from the tip of the left wheat ear is much heavier.
