1940-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-009

Description

Cataloged as UVC-2586 and DMR-025 in the VarietyVista system, the 1940-S Lincoln Wheat Cent DDR-009 exhibits extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the right wheat ear and stem. Die stage progression documents three stages: Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state. Stage B reaches early-mid die state with a die clash through the C of CENT and a die clash at the throat on the obverse. Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. The wheat ear and stem area is diagnostically useful because the fine parallel lines of the design provide a clear canvas against which extra thickness becomes visible. The Stage B die clashes on both the reverse C of CENT and the obverse throat indicate a clash event occurred during the intermediate production phase, adding a secondary variety element to the primary doubled die reverse attribution.
