Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-1458 and DMR-011, this 1940-D Lincoln Wheat Cent displays medium extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots, wheat ears and stems, and ERICA of AMERICA — a broad distribution of doubling across multiple reverse elements. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B in mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C presenting an unusual mixed condition where the reverse has reached late die state while the obverse remains in early die state. This mixed-state pairing in Stage C suggests the obverse die was replaced mid-production while the original reverse continued in service, creating a die pair with mismatched wear levels. The Denver Mint struck Wheat Cents in substantial quantities during 1940, and the medium-strength doubling on DDR-003 makes it identifiable under moderate magnification.
