1939 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-019
ErrorDescription
Struck from a Reverse of 1940 die, this 1939 Jefferson nickel carries Class II distorted hub doubling with spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM increasing from left to right, along with closer doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar as WDDR-019, the reverse displays the distinctive Type II steps on Monticello. The obverse die carries a die scratch at the back of Jefferson's head below ER of LIBERTY, while reverse markers include a die gouge through the upper I of AMERICA and another extending from the tip of the second A of AMERICA to the base of the building. The Reverse of 1940 designation is particularly significant, indicating this die was prepared with the revised hub introduced the following year, making it a transitional piece within the early Jefferson nickel series that bridges two distinct reverse hub types.
