1939 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-015
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-629 with die marker reference DMR-025, this 1939 Jefferson Nickel carries the important transitional designation "Reverse of 1938." The 1939 Jefferson Nickel exists with two distinct reverse hub types — the original 1938 design hub (RDV-001, known as "Wavy Steps" for its rendering of Monticello's front steps) and the revised hub phased in during 1939 production. This DDR-015 uses the earlier Reverse of 1938, making it a doubled die on a transitional variety. The doubling manifests as light spread and extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, FIVE CENTS, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and MO and LO of MONTICELLO. Die Stages A and B remain unconfirmed, while Stage C documents both reverse and obverse in Late Die State. Felix Schlag's Jefferson portrait obverse, selected through a 1938 design competition, pairs with the Monticello reverse that would undergo its hub revision during this transitional year. Philadelphia Mint, 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams. The intersection of doubled die characteristics with the Reverse of 1938 transitional hub creates a variety of dual significance — documenting both a hub impression anomaly and a specific moment in the Jefferson Nickel's design evolution.
