Description

Listed under the Reverse of 1938 parent, this proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-017 shares the same Class II distorted hub doubling characteristics as its Reverse of 1940 counterpart, showing a nice spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and slightly on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Attributed by Whaden Curtis, the variety is very similar to WDDR-012 and requires careful marker comparison. The 1939 Proof Jefferson Nickel exists with two distinct reverse types, and this listing covers the earlier Reverse of 1938 design. Reverse die markers include a curving die scratch to the lower left of the long left window, a die dot to the upper left of the small right window, a vertical die scratch to the upper right of the small right window, and three slanted die scratches inside the long right window with one to its upper left. No significant obverse markers have been noted. Collectors should verify which reverse type their specimen carries before attributing to the correct parent listing.
