1939 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 1939 1¢ WDDR-001, this Philadelphia Lincoln wheat cent exhibits doubled die reverse characteristics with light extra thickness on EPU, the dots, and the tops of the wheat ears. An additional hubbing impression produces a spread toward the center on some letters of EPU, indicating a secondary hub contact. Obverse die markers include a short horizontal die crack in the hair below the D in GOD and a die crack over the designer's initials. On the reverse, a die gouge appears south of the E in EPU, a short die scratch runs south-southwest from the left side of the D in UNITED about a third of the way down, a die scratch extends from the N in UNITED north-northeast to the lower C in CENT, and a very light die crack runs through the lower right-hand wheat grains of the right wheat ear. The dual nature of the doubling, combining extra thickness with a directional spread toward the center, suggests multiple hub impressions with slight rotational offset. No other cross-references are currently known for this variety.
