1939 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with identifiers UVC-1432 and DMR-016, this 1939 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die reverse exhibits extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots flanking the motto, both wheat ears, the stems, and AMERICA. The broad distribution of doubling across nearly every major reverse element makes DDR-006 one of the more comprehensive reverse doubled dies from the late Depression era. Three die stages document the progression: Stage A represents early-mid die state on both sides. Stage B shows the reverse reaching mid die state with a light die crack developing over the V.D.B. initials, while the obverse remains unchanged. Stage C represents late die state, currently unconfirmed. The Stage B die crack over V.D.B. provides a useful secondary diagnostic beyond the doubling itself, as collectors can correlate the presence or absence of this crack with the die stage of their specimen to narrow its position in the production sequence.
