1939 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-021
ErrorDescription
Combining Class II distorted hub doubling with Class VI distended hub doubling, WDDR-021 of the 1939 Jefferson nickel exhibits spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FIVE CENTS, increasing in magnitude from left to right across the reverse. The progressive intensification of doubling across the design is characteristic of these combined doubling classes, where both distortion and distension of the hub contribute to the displacement pattern. Type II steps are present, providing an additional diagnostic feature. Cross-referenced as CONECA DDR-011. The obverse shows no noted die markers. Reverse markers include a die dot between the E and first L of MONTICELLO and a die gouge to the lower right of the L of PLURIBUS. The 1939 Jefferson nickel represents the second year of Felix Schlag's design, and the parent listing identifies this as from the Doubled Monticello subtype. Combined Class II and VI doubling is less common than single-class varieties, making WDDR-021 notable for exhibiting two distinct hubbing anomalies on one die.
