Description
Struck as a proof with the Reverse of 1940 design, this Jefferson Nickel WDDR-017 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with a nice spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and slightly on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Attributed by Whaden Curtis, this variety is noted as being very similar to WDDR-012, requiring careful die marker comparison for correct attribution. The 1939 Proof Jefferson Nickel is significant for having two distinct reverse types (Reverse of 1938 and Reverse of 1940), and this listing covers the Reverse of 1940 parent. Reverse die markers include a curving die scratch to the lower left of the long left window, a die dot to the upper left of the small right window, a vertical die scratch to the upper right of the small right window, and three slanted die scratches inside the long right window with one to its upper left. No significant obverse markers have been noted.
