1939 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

The 1939 Jefferson Nickel Doubled Monticello — WDDR-001 — is one of the most celebrated doubled die varieties in the Jefferson Nickel series and has earned designation as a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die variety. An extremely strong spread to the west is visible on FIVE CENTS, MONTICELLO, and slightly on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Class IV Offset Hub Doubling. Cross-references: I-R-III, FS#5-022, Breen 2665. Reverse die markers: a die scratch from the lower left of M of MONTICELLO southwest to the F of FIVE; a die scratch from the right side of the L of MONTICELLO to the E of FIVE. The westward spread is pronounced enough that the doubling of Monticello's facade is visible to the naked eye — a rarity among business-strike doubled dies. The variety's presence in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS#5-022, the Breen catalogue as 2665, and the I-R-III CONECA reference confirms multi-source attribution. Thomas Jefferson's Virginia home is the central motif of the nickel's reverse, making the doubled impression of the building itself the most visually resonant feature of this famous variety.
