1938 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-001 under die markers UVC-081 and DMR-007, this 1938 Philadelphia Washington silver quarter exhibits strong extra thickness on all reverse lettering, wings, and stems from hub doubling. Three die states are documented. Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B shows both sides in mid die state condition. By Stage C in late die state, deterioration becomes extensive: a die crack develops down the eagle's right wing, another appears on the wing below AME of AMERICA, a crack runs across the bust, and an additional crack crosses the upper forehead and hair. Washington quarters from this early period in the series were struck in 90% silver, and DDR-001 represents one of the earliest doubled die discoveries cataloged for the denomination. The strong extra thickness affecting all reverse lettering makes this one of the more visually dramatic doubled die reverses among pre-war Washington quarters. Late die state specimens with the wing and bust cracks are likely the most commonly preserved.
