Description

DDR-002 on the 1938-D Lincoln Wheat Cent shows extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and dots with separation on the upper left wheat stalk. Die markers: UVC-1412 and DMR-010. Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed). Stage B is mid die state (unconfirmed). Stage C shows a die gouge near the left side of the first U in UNUM, placing it in late die state. I-code markers: I-2 extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM; I-2 dots with separation on the upper left wheat. Doubling class is Class IV Offset Hub Doubling. VarietyVista cross-reference: DDR-002. The three-stage die-state progression documented for DDR-002 — from unconfirmed EDS through unconfirmed MDS to the LDS gouge at UNUM — makes this an instructive variety for collectors interested in die-state sequencing. Extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM is a common presentation for Class IV offset doubling on Lincoln cent reverses, where the primary inscription bears the greatest observable spread. The 1938-D cent was struck at Denver in 95% copper alloy during the late Depression era.
