Description
Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1937 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse is part of the Washington Silver Quarters 1932-1964 series. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays an eagle perched on a bundle of arrows with olive branches below. Branch mint production continued. Die varieties exist at several mints. The Philadelphia Mint, America's oldest coin-making facility, has struck coins continuously since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $292 to $11K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 6.3 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #95803.
Rarity Notes
Scarce variety. The doubled die obverse is found on a small percentage of the total 1937 production of 19,696,000 pieces. Actively sought by variety collectors. Premium examples with strong, clear doubling command significantly higher prices than standard issues.
