1937 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
As the sole documented doubled die reverse for the 1937 Walking Liberty half dollar attributed by the Wexler Team, WDDR-001 occupies a unique position in the catalog for one of America's most artistically celebrated coin designs. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1937 50¢ WDDR-001, with no additional listings in other attribution systems, this variety represents the only confirmed instance of reverse hub doubling on a 1937 half dollar to receive formal recognition. Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty obverse and heraldic eagle reverse, in production from 1916 through 1947, are widely considered among the finest designs ever placed on American coinage, and the reverse eagle with its wings spread and perched on a mountain pine branch provides numerous fine details -- feathers, talons, branch texture, and inscription lettering -- where hub misalignment can produce detectable doubling. Philadelphia struck 9,522,000 half dollars in 1937, a Depression-era figure that, while representing recovery from the severely depressed mintages of 1932-33, still produced a relatively modest total by later standards. No die markers were noted for either obverse or reverse, which can complicate attribution for collectors who rely on secondary diagnostics to confirm variety identification beyond the doubling pattern itself. Walking Liberty half dollar varieties are less extensively cataloged than Lincoln cent or Jefferson nickel varieties, partly because the lower mintages and higher face value kept fewer specimens in circulation and partly because the collecting tradition for this series has historically emphasized date-mint-grade completion rather than die variety specialization.
