1937 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

This 1937 Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die reverse exhibits medium extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the separator dots, and the wheat ear tips. As WDDR-001 for the date, it is the primary doubled die reverse cataloged by the Wexler die variety reference system. On the obverse, diagnostic die markers include east-west die scratches through the top of the ear opening and light x-shaped die scratches on the temple area northwest of the eye. The reverse carries additional markers: two short parallel die scratches running west-southwest from the left side of the P in PLURIBUS, die scratches extending south from the E and the left dot in E PLURIBUS UNUM, and a short die scratch inside the lower opening of the B in PLURIBUS. These multiple die markers across both sides provide strong attribution points for authentication. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln Wheat Cent, struck in bronze composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, was the workhorse of American small change throughout the 1930s.
