1937 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Description

Strong extra thickness dominates E PLURIBUS UNUM, the separator dots, and both wheat ears with their stems on this 1937 Lincoln Wheat Cent, with the strongest doubling concentrated on the right-side wheat ear. Die markers UVC-1383 and DMR-017 track this working die through three stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B showing both reverse and obverse in mid-die state, and Stage C reaching late die state (also unconfirmed). The asymmetric concentration of the strongest doubling on the right wheat ear — rather than equal strength on both ears — reveals the directional nature of the hub displacement: the misalignment vector during the secondary hubbing impression favored the right side of the die face, producing maximum spread on design elements in that zone while the left wheat ear, though still showing strong doubling, received proportionally less displacement. Victor David Brenner's wheat ear reverse, with its detailed grain stalks, awns, and curved stems framing ONE CENT and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, is particularly sensitive to hub doubling because the fine parallel lines of the wheat stalks amplify any positional offset into clearly visible extra thickness. The 1937 Philadelphia Mint struck 309,170,000 wheat cents — a healthy Depression-era mintage — and the concentration of strong DDR varieties in mid-to-late 1930s dates reflects the production pressures and die management practices of that period. Examination under 7x-10x magnification with oblique lighting best reveals the extra thickness on the right wheat ear's individual grain details and stem contours.
