1937 VDDR VDDR-007

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as VDDR-007 for the 1937 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat Cent, this doubled die reverse shows extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, wheat tips, stems, and OF AMERICA. Struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) during the Depression era when Philadelphia production was recovering from severely depressed early-1930s levels. Victor David Brenner's Wheat Cent was in its twenty-eighth year when this die was manufactured. The die progressed through stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B showing numerous light die scratches on the upper reverse and light scratches in front of the obverse profile at mid-die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The mid-die-state scratches suggest the die pair received polishing during service, which could either accentuate or diminish hub doubling visibility. The UVC and DMR codes have not yet been formally assigned, indicating the variety awaits full integration into the VarietyVista numbering system. The extra thickness classification reflects Class VI distended hub doubling, where the hub expanded slightly between impressions.
