1937 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009

Description

The 1937 Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDR-009 is a Wexler-attributed doubled die reverse struck at Philadelphia (no mintmark) in 95% bronze. The doubling is a light spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the right border dot, and the right wheat ear — a subtle variety that rewards patient cherrypickers examining reverse legends under magnification. Two die stages are documented with distinct marker profiles. Stage A obverse: a heavy die scratch at the rim above WE. Stage B obverse: the die scratch above WE is still present but weakened. Stage A reverse: a thick northeast-southwest die scratch above the left border dot, and a die scratch running north from the upper left central area of the N in UNITED. Stage B reverse: only remnants of the scratch north from N in UNITED remain, and the wheat ear doubling shows less strongly. Documenting which stage markers are present when attributing a specimen helps narrow the die usage period and confirms attribution. The right wheat ear provides the most accessible initial feature; the UNUM spread then corroborates it, and the stage-appropriate die scratch finally locks the identification.
