1937 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA 6-R-IV and Coppercoins 1937P-1DR-006, the 1937 Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDR-005 exhibits a Class IV spread to the south showing on the letters of ONE CENT and USA. The southward displacement creates a characteristic shadow effect below the affected lettering that is most pronounced on the larger letters. Obverse die markers include several short die scratches in the lower area of the ear. On the reverse, a die scratch runs east-southeast from the rim above the E in EPU, and a short die scratch runs south from the underside of the center horizontal bar of the E in CENT. The triple cross-referencing across the Wexler, CONECA, and Coppercoins systems confirms this variety's established status in the Lincoln Cent variety community. Collectors should begin their examination with the ONE CENT inscription where the Class IV southward spread is most immediately apparent.
